Next Triathlon

I'm training for another triathlon! Treasure Island Triathlon Nov. 9

My next race is the Treasure Island Triathlon on November 9th and this time I have a partner to train with! Dave, in a moment of rare weakness, may have implied that he might have fun training for a triathlon with me. I took full of advantage of this and registered us both for for the race. We found him a bike, bought him a swimsuit and running shoes and started training before he could realize what he was actually doing.

Dave was pretty worried that the workouts would bore him. He likes to get his workout from dynamic activities like climbing, snowboarding, ice luge construction on snowy days up in Tahoe, or totally reorganizing the garage complete with self made cubbies, ski racks, and snowboard waxing station. Needless to say, he's got a busy mind. Turns out though, this could be the best sport for someone who's mind never stops. You're constantly switching sports making it hard to get bored of anything for too long. And the gear, oh the gear! It's an endless search for the best bike, shoes, best top to keep you warm, best top to keep you cool, watches, pedometers, extra tubes, bike pumps. If you can't find us, we're probably at Sports Basement rationalizing the purchase of the latest gear obsession.

Update:
The olympic distance was held the day before our sprint so we went to register, check out the scene, and calm a few nerves. The nerves we had were not helped by the overcast skies and the frigid breeze that kept blowing through. Either way, we tried to keep our spirits up telling eachother we had enough layers to manage the swing of bodily temperatures we'd experience the next day. By the time we left we were ready to race. As the sun came up the next morning it was clear that all our worrying was for nothing. The sky was blue and is was actually kind of warm!

It's hard to compare this race to the first one I did because the courses are so different. The swim was harder because it was in the bay, in a wetsuit, with a lot more people. I will say that at the start of the race all the ladies in my heat were great. We were all acclimating to the cold water and getting riled up and ready to race! The bike course was a loop you had to circle three times and the run was twice out and back. All in all I felt pretty strong until the run where my shin splints kicked in... I walked a few times and was pretty frustrated. In the end though, I was able to run most of it and ran across the finish line. A few of our friends came out to cheer us on. It made all the difference when I was feeling tired, to come around the corner and hear them cheering for me!

So that's the end of this triathlon season...but there's one more race before I take a break for winter. An 8K trail run up in Marin... more to come!
